YOUR OLD PHONE — Could Be Worth $300+

The phone sitting in your drawer — the one you replaced last year “just in case” — is losing value every month it sits there. Used phones depreciate continuously, and the difference between selling a phone today and selling it a year from now is often the difference between real money and pocket change. Here’s how to find out what yours is worth in about two minutes, and how to get the most for it.

Step 1: Check Its Value in Two Minutes

Get an instant baseline from any major trade-in calculator — your carrier, the manufacturer (Apple, Samsung and Google all run trade-in programs), a big retailer, or a buyback site. Enter model, storage size, and condition, and you’ll have a quote in minutes. Then check what identical models actually sell for on eBay or a local marketplace (“sold listings,” not asking prices). Private sale almost always pays more than trade-in — the gap is the price of convenience.

What Your Phone Is Roughly Worth

Exact prices move constantly, but the pattern is stable: recent flagships in good condition hold meaningful value for several years — a two-year-old flagship commonly fetches a few hundred dollars. Mid-range phones lose value faster. iPhones consistently hold value better than equivalent Android phones, and unlocked phones sell for more than carrier-locked ones. Storage size matters more than people expect; condition matters most of all — a cracked screen can halve an offer.

Trade-In vs. Selling Yourself: The Honest Math

  • Trade-in (carrier/manufacturer/retailer): instant, zero risk, no strangers — and the lowest payout, unless there’s a promotional bonus. Watch for those promos around new phone launches; manufacturers sometimes offer inflated trade-in credit that beats any private sale.
  • Buyback sites: a middle ground — better than standard trade-in, fully by mail, payment after inspection.
  • Selling privately: highest price, most effort. Meet in a public place for local sales; for shipped sales, use platforms with seller protection and document the phone’s condition on video before sending.

Before You Sell: The 10-Minute Prep That Raises the Price

  • Clean it properly and photograph it in good light — listings with clear photos of the actual device sell faster and higher.
  • Include the original box and cable if you have them; it genuinely lifts offers.
  • Check battery health (in settings) — a strong battery is a selling point worth stating in the listing.

The Critical Part: Wipe It Correctly

Before any sale or trade-in, in this order: back up the phone, sign out of your accounts (Apple ID / Google account), disable activation locks (Find My iPhone / Find My Device), remove the SIM and any memory card, then factory reset. Skipping the activation-lock step is the most common mistake — it makes the phone unusable for the buyer and gets trade-ins rejected.

If It’s Truly Worthless, Don’t Bin It

Phones too old or damaged to sell still shouldn’t go in the trash — batteries are a fire hazard in garbage trucks, and the metals are recyclable. Manufacturers and many retailers take old phones for free recycling, and a working old phone can serve as a dedicated dashcam, baby monitor, or music player. Some buyback services pay a small amount even for broken phones, which are bought for parts.

FAQ

When is the best time to sell an old phone?

Now. Values only fall — and they drop noticeably each time the manufacturer launches the next generation. Selling before a new model’s announcement typically beats selling after.

Is it safe to sell a phone after a factory reset?

Yes — modern iPhones and Android phones encrypt data by default, so a proper factory reset (after signing out of accounts) makes recovery of your personal data impractical.

Should I fix a cracked screen before selling?

Usually no — official repairs often cost more than the value they add. Get quotes for both paths, but most sellers come out ahead selling as-is with the damage clearly disclosed.

Two minutes to check the price, ten minutes to prep, and the drawer phone becomes real money — while it still can.
