FREE VPNs ARE A TRAP — What They Do With Your Data

“Free VPN” is one of the most searched tech terms every year, and it makes sense: everyone wants privacy, and nobody wants another subscription. But here’s the uncomfortable truth — running a VPN network costs serious money in servers and bandwidth. If you’re not paying for it, the operator is covering those costs another way. Often, the product being sold is you.

How Free VPNs Actually Make Money

Legitimate businesses need revenue. Free VPN operators typically use one or more of these models:

  • Selling browsing data. Multiple investigations over the years have caught free VPN apps logging and selling user browsing activity to data brokers and advertisers — the exact thing a VPN is supposed to prevent.
  • Injecting ads and trackers. Some free VPNs insert their own advertising or tracking into your sessions.
  • Selling your bandwidth. Some services turn your device into an exit node — strangers route their traffic through your internet connection, which can have serious consequences if that traffic is illegal.
  • Upselling from a limited free tier. This is the honest model: a reputable paid VPN offers a capped free plan hoping you’ll upgrade. These are the only free VPNs worth considering.

The Red Flags to Check Before Installing Any VPN

  • No clear company behind it. If you can’t find who owns the VPN, where it’s incorporated, and how it makes money, walk away.
  • A vague or contradictory privacy policy. “We don’t log your activity” followed by “we may share usage data with partners” is a contradiction, not a policy.
  • Excessive app permissions. A VPN app has no business reading your contacts or location.
  • No independent audit. Reputable VPN providers now commission third-party audits of their no-logs claims and publish the results.

When a Free VPN Is Actually Fine

The capped free tiers of reputable paid providers are legitimate: same infrastructure, same privacy policy, just limited data or speed. They’re fine for occasional use — public Wi-Fi at an airport, checking email on hotel internet. What they’re not good for is being your everyday privacy layer, because the caps make that impractical by design.

What a VPN Does — and Doesn’t — Protect

Even a good VPN is widely misunderstood. It encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, hiding activity from your local network and masking your IP from websites. It does not make you anonymous, stop websites from tracking you with cookies and fingerprinting, or protect you from phishing and malware. A VPN is one layer, not a force field.

The Bottom Line on Cost

Reputable paid VPNs cost a few dollars a month on annual plans. Compare that to the alternative: routing 100% of your internet traffic through a company whose business model may depend on watching it. Privacy from your data being resold, for less than a coffee a month, is one of the better deals in tech.

FAQ

Are all free VPNs dangerous?

No — free tiers from audited, reputable paid providers are safe. The danger zone is standalone “100% free unlimited VPN” apps with no visible business model.

Can a free VPN steal my passwords?

Sites using HTTPS encrypt your login details end-to-end, so a VPN can’t simply read passwords. But a malicious VPN still sees which sites you visit, when, and how often — and that metadata is valuable and revealing.

Do I even need a VPN at home?

It depends on your goals. For hiding activity from your internet provider or accessing region-locked content, yes. For general security on your own network, modern HTTPS already does much of the heavy lifting.

The rule is simple: if a VPN is free, unlimited, and has no visible way of earning money — you’re not the customer, you’re the inventory.
