Slow Wi-Fi is rarely your internet plan’s fault. In most homes, the connection arriving at the router is fine — it’s what happens between the router and your devices that ruins it. Before you call your provider or upgrade your plan, check these settings and fixes, starting with the one that solves the majority of cases.
First: The One Setting to Check — Your Wi-Fi Band and Channel
Most routers broadcast on two bands. The 2.4GHz band travels far but is slow and badly congested — your neighbors’ networks, Bluetooth devices, and even microwaves interfere with it. The 5GHz (and 6GHz on newer routers) band is far faster but shorter-range. Two fixes:
- Make sure your devices are on the fast band. Log into your router’s admin page and check that 5GHz is enabled. If your router broadcasts one combined network name, devices sometimes cling to 2.4GHz; creating separately named networks (e.g., “Home” and “Home-5G”) lets you force important devices onto the fast one.
- Change the channel. If you’re stuck on 2.4GHz, switching the channel to 1, 6, or 11 — whichever your neighbors use least — can transform a congested connection. Most routers default to “auto,” which often chooses poorly in crowded buildings.
Reposition the Router (It Matters More Than You Think)
Wi-Fi signal drops through walls, floors, metal, and water (including aquariums and, oddly, people). The router belongs high up, central in the home, and in open air — not in a cabinet, not behind the TV, not in the basement corner where the cable enters the house. Moving a router two meters can double real-world speeds in distant rooms.
Restart It — Then Automate the Restart
Routers are small computers that run for months without a break; memory fills, and performance quietly degrades. If a restart fixes your Wi-Fi, schedule an automatic reboot (many routers support this) for 4 a.m. and forget about it.
Count Your Devices — and Evict the Freeloaders
Every smart bulb, TV, camera and old tablet shares your bandwidth and your router’s attention. Check the router admin page for the connected-device list. Anything you don’t recognize? Change your Wi-Fi password — a neighbor may be along for the ride. Old routers in particular struggle past 15–20 simultaneous devices.
Update the Router Firmware
Firmware updates fix speed bugs and security holes, but most routers never get updated by their owners. Look for the update option in the admin page. While you’re there: if your router is more than 5–6 years old, it may predate modern Wi-Fi standards entirely, and no setting will fix that — a current mid-range router is one of the highest-impact tech purchases a household can make.
When It Really Is Your Internet Plan
Run a speed test twice: once on Wi-Fi next to the router, once with a laptop plugged in by cable. If the cabled speed is far below what you pay for, the problem is upstream — that’s when you call your provider. If cabled speed is fine but Wi-Fi lags, the fixes above are your answer.
